Flash Fiction: The Pact

The last time they all gathered, the five of them, the sun shone and leaves shaded the gazebo overlooking the lake. The summer of their lives.

Now the winter set in. Aged beyond their years, pre-mature wrinkles matched grey hairs. A pact bounded them together. A buried secret they left under the weight of the freezing water, a mirror into their souls. If one goes down, they all go down.

Memories haunted the air colliding the past with the present. The snow cut through the illusion of safety the years created and chilled to the core. The truth floated to the surface.

“They found the body.”
