Note: If I miss next week’s Friday Fictioneers (it lands on Christmas), I wish everyone a happy (insert your holiday choice here) and the best for 2020.
The last time they all gathered, the five of them, the sun shone and leaves shaded the gazebo overlooking the lake. The summer of their lives.
Now the winter set in. Aged beyond their years, pre-mature wrinkles matched grey hairs. A pact bounded them together. A buried secret they left under the weight of the freezing water, a mirror into their souls. If one goes down, they all go down.
Memories haunted the air colliding the past with the present. The snow cut through the illusion of safety the years created and chilled to the core. The truth floated to the surface.
“They found the body.”
Great murder-mystery set up. I would read a story that started this way! Have a great holidays 🙂

This one stroked my fancy! Shame no other details jumped forward like the crime or characters. 😀
Thanks I!

Brrrr! And not just about the snow …
Well written! And … secrets inevitable come out, and rarely in the time or way one wanted them to. … And some secrets are better never to be made …

Especially when a number of them know the truth. Who will crack under pressure?

They were all party to the crime and now they have to face their karma.
What happens next? It’s payback time!
X’Mas wishes in advance!

My feeling is, it’s not as it seems and group dynamics is complicated.

Wonderfully done, T.
Should this ever develop into a novel, this is the best opening!

Great story – reminds me of A Secret History. I want to know who the body belonged to!

Funny you say that. I was inspired by The Secret History (sort of). One of these stories stuck in my psyche.

They definitely should have used more rocks to weigh that body down 🙂

On the bright side, no perp DNA on bodies soaked in water for an extended period.

You’ve created a situation which could be very fruitful. The idea of a small group who know about a murder immediately has me speculating!

I’m intrigued by the concept but for now I can’t seem to expand the story. Perhaps over time something will trigger. 😀

I think they all suffered in their own way. The subconscious is a force that can’t be controlled.

Years of a fragile trust, suddenly on edge; who will crack first and confess.
A good story that questions people’s loyalty.

It would be stressful. Stressed people are likely to do stupid things.

Great post. I wish you were not limited to 100 words so I could see how it ends. Thanks for the mystery.
