Flash Fiction: Money Spinner

The vintage carousel shook off her dust. In mint condition, her days in storage made no sense. The city organisers sighed with relief; the ride was a perfect money-spinner for a city going broke.

Tourist bait in place, children climbed onto the assortment of animals as music played. Giggles filled the air as the animals started to move, moulding to the rider, their bodies bopping up and down.

Adults filmed their little darlings from the sidelines. The merry-go-round sped up. The children wrapped their arms around the poles, hanging for dear life. Vision blurred.

The carousel came to a halt.

The children were gone…

  1. Nice to see a horror story creeping into my FF selection this week, this feels like it could be the beginning of a much longer piece. A self-aware carousel is fun too – always good to shake up the perspective.

  2. You got me there, Tannille. Brilliant ending, yet so haunting. You did well in the 100 words.
It’s been awhile, but from memory are you from Western Australia? There’s this awful case of a four year old girl going missing in the middle of the night from the family tent which sounds too much like this. I’m so concerned. Used to live in Geraldton.
    Best wishes,

    1. Sorry R, I’ve been on hiatus from the blog. Life happened! Yes, I am from WA. The little girl was found in good health (I’m sure you know). It will be interesting to see what the guy’s motives were. He may not have been a pervert but a lonely guy with high psychological issues.
