Flash Fiction: Sleeping Dreams

Maddy followed the hustle of the city. Her accounting firm volunteered her for a doughnut and coffee run. The job paid well, but numbness lived in her soul.

A rainbow caught her eye in the music store window. She slowed her pace. Without thinking, she entered the store. The guitar called to her as she inspected its stunning paint job.

“Do you play?”

“Oh, no… I… I mean I used to… in school.”

How could she forget her dream? Change the world one song at a time…

The shop assistant offered her a paint-stained hand. “I’m Melody, your muse. And we have a mission — one song at a time.”

  1. I love this,Tannille. So sweet and I could very much see myself in your story. I don’t play guitar but I was learning violin for a while and bought a proper keyboard with piano-weighted keys during lockdown. I am trying to get back to them and another day passes, and another. I did manage a walk along the beach at Patonga today and sat on a rock listening to the various “notes” the water made lapping against and through the rocks.
I’ve been out of action for awhile. My health has been playing up and we’ve also been houseminding in Cremorne Point a few times this year for a school friend of mine. She just off the harbour and I catch ferries everywhere and explore all sorts of nooks and crannies I haven’t been to before or not for a while. I also heard about a monthly poetry reading at Sappho Books https://www.sapphobooks.com.au/ on Glebe Point Road and read a new poem I’d written about being a night owl. It was the first reading I’ve done in something like 10 years. Unfortunately, I live about 2 hours drive away so difficult to get there from here which is a shame. There was a great ambiance and about 100 people turned up which I haven’t seen at a reading before aside from a street festival. Very encouraging to see poetry isn’t dead.
    How are you going?
    Best wishes,
    Rowena

    1. There are never enough hours in the day to do everything. It sounds like you’re busy getting out and about. Beaches are amazing places. They give off their own melody.

Wow a poetry reading. Bet you had a blast. Is there a poetry reading group closer to home? 2 hours away is a bit much, even for Aussies.

I started writing at Medium about 6 weeks ago. Started out as an experiment but the blogging community is fun. Think Friday Fictioneers on steroids. Plus there is opportunity to be paid change. I really need to get back to the novel. Not enough hours!

      Look after yourself, R.

      1. Thanks for the tips, Tannille. I follow them up. Good luck with the novel. I’m compiling some of my recent poetry and editing as I go. At least I was a few days ago. Must get back to that.
Need to look for a closer poetry reading as you say or possibly start organising one.
        Have a great week.
        Best wishes,
        Ro
