She drove through the night. Headlights offered little guidance along the blackened country road. Memories flooded her eyes.
“I have to go. It’s a huge opportunity.”
“Darling, I’ll leave a light on for you.”
Ever so understanding. Why didn’t he stop me? She ran off to the city, chasing a dream, but her heart died with David. Heart attack.
She wiped her tears with the back of her hand as she pulled into the driveway. The light by the door flickered on.
Darling, I’ll leave a light on for you.
David kept his word. His spirit waited for her return.

Story Notes
This prompt picture reminded me of Belinda Carlisle’s classic, “Leave a Light On”. The Muse is stuck in Halloween mode and decided to bastardise the song.
lovely.. short n sweet.💕

As sweet as sweet can be.

I’m assuming David was the husband, not the dream she went off to chase. But both readings are possible

David was the husband in my mind but really it’s up to the reader.

I am going to choose to believe she went to the city to try her hand at something, music, art, whatever and David understood that.
Sucks big time that he had to go and die. Now we are left to wonder if his dying quashed the desire to make it or if she would still be there were he alive… Love when stories leave us pondering!

That’s the beauty of bite-sized fiction. Often there are more questions than answers. I don’t even have the answers. lol
Thanks, D!

Very scary. Sounds like a lot of pain and regret … and love.

Whatever she chased in the city sure wasn’t as important as her husband. Too bad she didn’t figure that out until too late.

Regret is a terrible thing to live with.

Hopefully, she chased her dream. He wanted her to and left the light on, even from beyond! Lovely though sad story.

I think she feels guilty. Her emotions are still raw.

You’re right, T. I enjoyed reading this story, admittedly filling-in as readers often do.
This could easily be non-fiction. 🙂 Well done.

Aw, it’s so hard to know which dreams to chase, I hope she learns to live with her decision.

A tragic story, with a ray of hope at the end, although I hope David’s spirit is benign and not ready to exact vengeance on her for leaving him alone. But that’s just my twisted reading. Very thought-provoking. Your Muse’s efforts have succeeded. 🙂

I was thinking a bitter sweet love story, but really the ending could go either way. I like your twisted reading and to be fair twisted is where my mind usually goes. lol.
Thanks, M.

She’s haunted one way or another. Good spin on that image, T.

Ooh! I like where you went with this one, T. Your muse comes up with some good stuff when she’s not talking back, and you put her to work.
