Flash Fiction: Little Red Riding Hood

Little Red decided to stop by the playground on the way to her grandmother’s house. Her gum boots stomped through the puddles and created ripples. The rain aftermath was a delightful solace.

The water mirrored an image of a man. He towered over Little Red, his shadow engulfing her. Every town has a wolf.

The predator grabbed her and dragged her through the wet. Against the force of his body, she didn’t stand a chance. Red fumbled at her wrist, trying to break free.

“Freeze scum bucket!”

The sound of Granny’s gun echoed.

“I’m getting better at this GPS thingy.”

Note:
This week’s story is a modern retelling of the “Little Red Riding Hood” fairy tale and belongs in my “Fudged Up Fairy Tales” series. In Australia, gum boots are also called rain boots.

    1. I would have liked to have explored Granny. I can’t see her taking crap from anyone. 😀.

Local terms are interesting. Often they are taken for granted. What do you call “gum boots”?

      Thanks R!

  1. Fun story. Those who prey on children are never healed. Gran’s solution works and modern tracking technology is wonderful. Well done.

I’ve never heard them called “gum boots,” but it is used in the US, often as one word. I’ve heard them called rain boots, overshoes, rubbers, and galoshes.

    Well done, Tannille.
