Flash Fiction: Ruins of Isis

Ruins: such mystery, a majestic command of times bygone. Once my home, now rubble. The Romans came. The Romans destroyed. Somewhere under broken stones ancient wonders, our captives knew nothing about. The secret system of tunnels untouched for thousands of years — a promise of safekeeping. Some technology is best kept buried. However, modern humans are close to discovery with their electronics. They aren’t ready to open the door to magic.

“Come on Isis. Stop documenting. We don’t have all day.”

I threw my ballpoint pen and journal into my pack and followed Webby toward an entrance long forgotten. The walls moved aside and welcomed me home.

Note:
This story is set in my ImmorTales series world. So many characters are ravenous to tell their stories about their immortal lives but stories only come in pieces. Maybe I should embrace the process rather than fight and share the snips. Currently, I am working on Judick’s story. She starred in my last flash fiction post, The Only Way is Nude (click here). I’m on the final stretch of the novel but have slowed down. A writer can only “make shiz up” for so long and move forward before historical holes emerge (this ImmorTales installment is set during the 1600s spice trade, aka during a gap in my history knowledge).

    1. I watched a guy on YouTube recently who claims the pyramids were a chemical plant. Apparently traces of chemicals have been found in all of them. He was really in depth with the science and angel of tunnels. Fascinating concept.

      Thanks, I.

  1. I enjoyed your amalgamation of times and technologies. Sounds like a fun book to read. I’ve read books where there are bits and pieces that aren’t clearly joined but in the big picture fall into place. Best wishes on completing your novel. I just finished an 8000 short story and that took it out of me. Rest when you need to.

    1. Wow, 8000 is quite meaty. Woohoo. Is your story for a competition? This novel started as short story and before I knew it, explosion. I’m resting for a bit because the past was brutal! I need unicorns and kittens.

      Thanks, L.

  2. Ah, you did show up. I thought it was a typo or you were bullshittin’. I like the vibe, the lament of this one. It also feels like a parable with how quickly AI is advancing. It feels like we are on the cusp of magic, which is exciting and terrifying.
