The nymph watched beneath the water. Her body, a shimmery dark mass under nature’s mirror. On the bank, a young man sat hypnotised by the ripples as he tossed stones and pondered over his life. The nymph waded closer. The sun’s rays danced on her naked body. The mortal blinked in disbelief.
The water maiden giggled and beckoned him to come, join her for a swim. Her perfect lips opened, an irresistible medley escaped. His desire latched onto her sound waves and followed heaven into the deep water, leaving behind his 21st-century problems.

Dear Tanille,
Intriguing and ethereal. Poor guy. He didn’t stand a chance, did he?

Bewitching. End of all problems really.
Wonder if these nymphs truly exist. Many souls have been lost.

Nature does seem to have a spirit to those tuned, so who knows. Perhaps they live in another realm or our psyche.

Very well-written….I can imagine moments like this, when one’s mental health has been tampered with….some visions….and…voila…

Oooo I like that interpretation! I never considered the nymph might have been in his mind.

Nice. I like a simple story, wrapped in malice. But, perhaps a melody escaped her perfect lips?

Nothing like a bit of malice to start the day. Your wording flows better than mine. 😀

Where’s this river? I get it, but that doesn’t seem like a bad way to go
You made it out for blog day. 🥳 I’m skipping this week. I haven’t even caught up on last week’s yet.

I wanted to end with “he died with a smile of his face” but the line didn’t go with the flow.
Tsk tsk Mr Lazy!
Thanks

Very Nice.. I had also considered a Greek myth take but on the topic of Narcissis..

That’s a great myth. I can see the connection with the prompt.

The temptation and lure of the blissful Nymph calling to him, is like the promised of a hundred virgins; what trickery is this?
There is both a mythical feel and a sad moment of self-depreciation in your story.

There is definitely a tone to the story. I believe he died smiling.

Clever you! Hinting at perfection is so much more powerful than trying to describe it. She sounds like a sort of solo Siren, luring him to his death.

I thought about calling her a siren. The myths often blur water maidens (mermaids, sirens, water nymphs). I would have loved more words to play with.

I like that you specify 21st C problems. It makes everything more surreal and yet real.

I think every generation has their own issues, but 2020s are shaping up to be rather intense. Partly it’s in our heads, but it feels real.

Maybe she led him to her magical world and he is just dead for us. Great story, drew me right in (no pun intended). And there’s the question: are there also male nymphs?

Sorry for the late reply, G. In my world there are male and female of everything, including nymphs. But in Greek lore, they are probably called something else.

I’m so glad this didn’t end with, “and then he woke up.” But then maybe this was a dream within a dream. Yeah, let’s not go there. Beautifully told story.
