It didn’t look like much, but it was theirs — a place for kids to hang out. No adults allowed. Of course, if the oldies knew about the haunt, they would freak. A danger zone!!!

Kids will be kids. They claimed the derelict building as their clubhouse and spray-painted names on the walls to mark their territory. The children played games, told stories, and always returned home as the sky turned orange-pink — until they didn’t. The minors vanished without a trace, only their paint remained. The blame rested with the parents… dodgy deals were made.

The Pied Piper always comes back for his children.

This story is a modern retelling of the famous German fairytale/folklore/historical event, “The Pied Piper’.

    1. I’m not sure what the piper did with the kids. I know historically, there is a theory based on evidence, that the kids ended up settling villages in nearby countries. German surnames pop up in records. But the folk tales are very grim. Chilling.

      Thanks L!

      1. I think I would prefer it if the Piper didn’t own the building. There’s something very alluring about the idea of a penniless musician owning only his pipe and his motley; and wreaking such havoc on conventional society!
